01.09.202604:43:18UTC+00Sensex Slips for Second Day

India’s BSE Sensex slipped about 0.2% to 76,798 on Tuesday, extending the previous session’s losses, as rising crude oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East weighed on risk appetite despite stronger-than-expected domestic growth data. India’s economy expanded by 7.8% year-on-year in the April–June quarter, driven by robust investment, manufacturing activity, and consumer demand.

Nevertheless, sentiment remained fragile, with Brent crude hovering near $91 per barrel amid intensifying regional tensions. At the same time, the Reserve Bank of India was widely believed to have intervened in the foreign exchange market ahead of Tuesday’s open, helping the rupee appreciate toward 95 per US dollar.

On the equity front, HDFC Bank declined about 1% and stayed in the spotlight after recently hitting a roughly 30‑month low following CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan’s decision not to seek a third term. The stock has fallen around 28.5% in 2026, with mounting governance concerns exacerbating investor unease. Other notable laggards included Adani Energy (-1.5%), EPL (-8.7%), Kalyan Jewellers (-2.3%), and TCS (-2.4%).
