01.09.202606:00:55UTC+00New Zealand Equities Close 0.9% Lower

New Zealand equities fell 130 points, or 0.9%, to finish at 13,787 on Tuesday, marking their lowest close since August 17 and wiping out the prior session’s gains. Losses were led by industrials, real estate, consumer discretionary, and consumer staples stocks.

The broader market mirrored overnight weakness on Wall Street, as rising oil prices stoked renewed inflation concerns against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Middle East. Sentiment was further constrained by caution ahead of this week’s Reserve Bank of New Zealand policy meeting, with markets largely pricing in a 25 bp rate hike following the increase in May.

Investors also continued to digest the government’s move to postpone planned fuel excise increases from January 1, 2027, a decision announced in the lead-up to the general election scheduled for November 2026.

Among the notable decliners were Auckland International Airport (-3.2%), Ebos Group (-1.9%), A2 Milk (-1.6%), Infratil (-1.1%), and Contact Energy (-0.8%).
