01.09.202605:00:00UTC+00India’s Manufacturing Momentum Eases as HSBC PMI Slips to 52.8 in August

India’s manufacturing sector lost a little steam in August, with the HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) easing to 52.8 from 53.5 previously. The latest reading, covering August 2026 and updated on 1 September 2026, still signals an expansion in factory activity, but at a slower pace than before.

A PMI above 50 indicates growth in the manufacturing sector, while a reading below that threshold points to contraction. The move from 53.5 to 52.8 suggests that while demand and production remain on a positive trajectory, the intensity of growth has moderated. This could reflect a more cautious environment for orders, output or hiring, even as the industry continues to expand.

Investors and policymakers will be watching subsequent PMI releases closely to assess whether the August figure represents a temporary pause in momentum or the start of a more prolonged softening in India’s manufacturing cycle.
